.: A Deadly Game of Chess - Prelude :.
· DV8 [21-01-2008 / 13:08:00]

Set in late 2057, some of the characters have just survived Harlequin's Back and are still trying to process the effects that Dunkelzahn's death - and more importantly, his last will and testament - will have on the world.

The Morian
The Morian, a legendary shadowrunner, is supposedly back in town . The buzz of his arrival is spreading through the Seattle underworld like a bad rash, and they say he's out to target some of the bequests from Dunkelzahn's will that are being issued out by the Draco Foundation and he’s starting with the black king piece given to Leonard Aurelius.

Bequest #57 of Dunkelzahn's Will read:

"To Damien Knight, I leave my antique chess set, except for the black king piece. I hope you find another worthy opponent. It was only 60 seconds, old friend, but what a ride!"

Bequest #79 of Dunkelzahn's Will read:

"To Leonard Aurelius of Ares Macrotechnology, I leave the black king of my antique chess set. May you prove a worthy opponent."

Nina, Nick and Iris
Nick has left for Tir Tairngire and he has taken Iris with him, leaving the Wastelands in the care of Maximilian. Maximilian doesn't intend to stay manager of the club, and paves the way for Johnny Wu. Nick's reason for leaving is entirely unclear and leaves Nina angry at Nick for taking her child and frustrated because she never got a reason why.

Nina, left homeless until Nick returns, needs time and resources to find a place to stay until her payment for her job in Washington comes through, but she finds her contacts drying up quickly. Still angry and confused she hires David to find out where Nick took her daughter Iris.

Nina hires David to find out that on the 17th of August, 2057 Nick and Iris leave on suborbital flight TT704 to Portland, Tir Tairngire. Through airport security camera footage, they are seen exiting the gate and entering a taxi cab. Later, it is found out that the cab was involved in a fatal accident, killing the cab-driver and consuming the car in fire. The black box is destroyed and through infiltrating the dispatcher’s system and a bit of blind luck, David is able to find out that the two were taken to the Portland Hilton where they check in under their regular names. The hotel room is paid for by Nick on his regular cred-account.

.: Tuesday, 22 August, 2057 :.

This is Talisman's birthday. The Morian has been in town for about a week, coming into Seattle through smugglers out of Denver. Nicholas van Zant, a Johnson that supposedly did a lot of work for Ares, hires the runners, in groups of two, to do a series of related, but independent actions.

Team A:

They were brought in contact with Nicholas van Zant through Ralphie at a meeting at Danté's Inferno, a well-known nightclub. Van Zant, who has his bodyguard present, treats Ralphie with little dignity and dents his pride by waving him away like an errand boy. Ralphie doesn't seem to dare voice his objections to the insult and leaves the meet.

The duo is asked, by van Zant, to place a large, metallic case [.5m x .5m x .5m x 4kg], filled with crystalised C-12 compound, somewhere in a family grand café called Greendale's. Greendale's is situated on the ground and first floor of a luxury apartment complex on the corner of Union Street, Madison Street and 12th Avenue. The task also includes detonating the device with a special detonator at exactly 15:45 on the 25th of August. The trigger requires the person to pull the switching within a one-mile radius of the payload.

Pay: 12,000 ¥, 7,000 ¥ in advance, 5,000 ¥ on delivery. Scheduled meet for the second payment: Sunday, 27 August, 2057 at 22:00 at Dante’s Inferno.

Team B:

Adam and Proteus were approached by Maximilian with the offer of work. He set up a meeting between the two runners and Van Zant in the basement of the Wastelands.

The meeting with van Zant goes down without too much trouble, but it becomes quite evident that the runners have very little say in the matter. Whether they like it or not, they will end up doing the job anyone. Extra precautions had been taken by the Wastelands security staff to make sure that the team would not go into the basement armed.

The task is for the deployment of two wooden cases [.5m x .5m x .5m x 4kg], one of which is filled with crystalised C-12, the other is filled with a phosphorous nitrate mixed for maximum fire explosion. They have to be placed in a main sewer passage underneath the junction of Union Street, Madison Street and 12th Avenue.

A member of Team X has marked the deployment area, and will be in touch.

The task also includes detonating the device with a special detonator at exactly 16:15 on the 25th of August. The trigger requires the person to pull the switching within a one-mile radius of the payload.

Pay: 15,000 ¥, 7,000 ¥ in advance, 8,000 ¥ on delivery. Scheduled meet for the second payment: Sunday, 27 August, 2057 at 21:00 at the Wastelands.

Team C:

Bishop contacted Morden and Isabella with a promise of work. They had to meet their Johnson - van Zant - at an old abandoned movie theatre.

The meeting with van Zant and the Morian went fairly okay, apart from some minor complications with a mischievous Morden. The task was to take up positions around the junction of Union Street, Madison Street and 12th Avenue, and take out as many Lonestar patrol vehicles that they can get their scopes on. They have been given a Ranger Arms SM-3 Sniper rifle with two clips of APDS rounds, each and should take up crossfire positions and be prepared to go to work at 16:15.

Pay: 17,000 ¥, 10,000 ¥ in advance, 7,000 ¥ on delivery. Scheduled meet for the second payment and the return of the rifles: Sunday, 27 August, 2057 at 23:00 at the abandoned movie theatre.

Team D:

Brandt set up a meeting between Abel, Joy and van Zant at the Café Voltaire.

The meeting with van Zant and the Morian goes well. The task is to accompany Lonestar in escorting a client as Ares appointed Knight Errant bodyguards, and steal a chess piece from the client. The escort team exists of a driver, a bodyguard and a pleasure girl - all professionals. Abel will take the place of the bodyguard, Joy as the pleasure girl.

The escort team will be accompanied by a group of six Lonestar patrol bicycles. At 16:15 they will pull away from the bodyguards and that’s when Abel can overtake the driver and drive to a warehouse on Pike street where they will meet a member of Team X who will override the courier’s cybernetic compartment systems and obtain the item.

They receive two security badges, and they have to leave a fingerprint scan. Within twenty-four hours their details as KE liaisons will be inserted into the Lonestar system. The only things they have to do is show up at the 32nd precinct [10th Av. and John Street] at 14:30 on Friday, 25 August, 2057 and make your presence known at the front assignment desk; Abel Morgan and Joy Hawkeye.

Pay: 17,000 ¥, 7,000 ¥ in advance, 10,000 ¥ on delivery. Scheduled meet for the second payment: Sunday, 27 August, 2057 at 2000 at the Café Voltaire.

Team X:

It is Wedge's duty to do the calculations on where underneath the junction the bombs set by Team B will have the most effect. The goal is for the first bomb to crack the pavement, and for the second bomb to set everything alight, with the help of the built up gasses in the sewer systems that will - if the bombs are placed properly - be released into the square when the first bomb goes off.

Wedge is also required to help Team D bring the captured courier to a safe place in order to take the chess piece from him.

.: Thursday, 24 August, 2057 :.

Team B:
Proteus gets a call from Wedge, asking for a meet with Adam and him at a warehouse at the eastern end of Pike Street, parallel to Union Street. He wants to go over some of the details, and would like for them to take the packages with them.

The Warehouse is in a desolate, remote part of Pike street, a moderately large boulevard. The street just seems to slowly deteriorate and more and more obstacles litter the road until it simply comes to a full stop and continues on in hovels and shacks. Near the end, at 2849 there’s a three-story warehouse with two large docking bays and one ramp leading up to garage doors. If Wedge’s attention is somehow attracted, he’ll open the garage doors and let you in. Inside, on the ground floor, there are two desks, stacked with electronic surveillance/electronic warfare equipment, all stacked in a large metallic cage of about 4 x 4 x 4. Everything is designed to be movable within an hour; it’s definitely a temporary setup. The warehouse has a ramp, leading up to all of the floors, like in a multi-story parking lot. There’s a story beneath street level as well. It’s also where an entrance to the sewer system is located.

The team goes down into the sewers under the guidance of Wedge, and place the bombs down several hundreds of yards of cramped sewer tunnel. Adam, especially, has a hard time dealing with the smell because of his enhanced senses.

.: Friday, 25 August, 2057 :.

Team A:
With the aid of Talisman's arcane talents they manage to get the package into a storeroom in the back of Greendale's without getting seen. Talisman notices a couple of Russian speaking individuals arguing in the back, but decides to pay no attention to them. He delivers the package and returns to Nina, sitting in a car in an alley down the street, waiting for him. Their mission is almost accomplished, but not before the both of them have a really hard time dealing with what they have to do. They both know that, once agreed, it's usually not such a good idea to go back on your deal, not this close to closing time, so they decide to go through with it. At 15:45 they detonate the bomb killing and injuring many people inside Greendale's.

Team B:
Adam and Proteus position themselves in a small park, lined with corporate art further up 12th Avenue and wait. At 15:45 they hear the explosion coming from the general direction of the junction. Adam stays cool while Proteus wonders if one of the bombs might have gone off prematurely. They notice many people flocking towards the junction, as well as many ambulance, fire-fighting and Lonestar vehicles. Unsure if they should detonate the bomb with so many (innocent) civilian people on the square, Proteus hesitates. Adam, not giving a shit about innocents, takes the detonation device and keys the button at 16:15. The second bomb cracks the pavement on the junction. Parts of the road sink away in the devastation of the sewer system below, gas pipes burst, mixing with built up methane gas in the sewers, ignited by the third bomb, white phospherous engulfing the entire junction with the fire of a thousand suns. Many civilians get injured, many Lonestar officers, fire-fighters and ambulance and DocWagon personel get injured. Those ambulance people that are still uninjured try to treat the wounded as much as possible, but everytime the phosper comes into contact with air it ignites again, making it virtually unable to treat the wounded.

Team C:
Morden and Isabella have taken up position on the South-East (Morden) en North-West corners of the junction, on top of the building. They had been told to wait until 16:15 before starting to snipe at the Lonestar patrol vehicles still in the square, causing as much devastation as they can. They are quickly picked up by drones and helicopters, though, so their attack only lasts shortly. As Isabella decides to make a run for it before she's pinned by drones, she notices van Zant's bodyguard creeping up behind Morden on the rooftop on the opposite side of the junction. Morden doesn't notice anything as the bodyguard puts a gun against his head and executes him. Startled, Isabella makes her way down, and into the alley. In her hurry she grabs the rifle at the barrel, made scorching hot by the many shots fired, burning her hand. Once in the alley she's pursued by Lonestar drones and officers. The bodyguard shows up to use his magic to hide her from her pursuers. Fearful of being executed like Morden was, she tries to fight him off. He uses his arcane talents to calm her down, and for the first time in her life she feels oddly comfortable with a man. Without saying anything, he lets her go as soon as they are no longer pursued. Immediately that feeling of comfort is lost. Isabella disappears down different alleys, disassembling the rifle as she goes along, hiding the different parts in different dumpsters.

Team D:
Early that morning, Joy and Abel show up at the 32nd precinct, and are greeted by Dharman Maghsoudi, a Lonestar Liaison. Joy and Abel identify themselves as Knight Errant officers, here to make sure that the courier is well protected by the Lonestar officers. It's an joint venture to improve the relations between the two security companies. They are briefed on their mission for that day;

Bilal Nivens, a Knight Errant bonded courier, will be brought to the 32nd precinct shortly after his trip to the Draco Foundation's Seattle offices. He is to be escorted, by limousine, to SeaTac airported from where he'll fly directly to Detroit. Bilal will come in at 15:30, and the journey will begin at 16:00.

Everything goes as planned. Bilal Nivens, an all-business bonded courier, arrives at 15:30, and everyone gets ready. Abel is in the front, riding shotgun next to a Lonestar driver, and Joy is allowed with the courier in the back, as a "hostess," making sure he has everything he needs to make his journey comfortable. Four Lonestar patrol bikes are preceeding the car, and two are following it, as they move down Union Street, towards the I5. Around 15th Avenue they get stuck in traffic, as it seems there was an explosion a few blocks up ahead, causing traffice to build up. At 16:15 the following call comes in, as the second and third bomb go off;

"Oh my god. A second and a third bomb went off underneath the intersection! Multiple cars are on fire! Oh shit! Oh my god! No! Cal? Darren? Katy? Multiple gunshots! It’s like a fucking warzone out here! Send all units! Send all units!"

The Lonestar patrol bikes break away from the limousine as expected, unable to stand hearing their colleagues in distress, at which time Joy subdues Bilal Nivens and Abel subdues the driver. They take control of the limousine and take a left onto 15th avenue, and another left onto Pike Street, where they meet up with Wedge who leads them down the street towards the warehouse.

They drive the limousine into the warehouse and Wedge patches the courier into his systems to do a diagnostics run on his cyberware systems. Afterwards, Wedge hacks into the couriers cyberware system and subverts the safety mechanisms to open up a large cybercompartment in the man's chest, and they retrieve a black king chess piece. Abel and Joy get rid of the car while Wedge gets rid of Bilal Nivens and brings the king piece to van Zant.

.: A Deadly Game of Chess - Aftermath :.

More than ever Lonestar's contract as security provider for the Seattle Metroplex is up for serious re-evaluation as council members are demanding answers to questions that Lonestar can't seem to answer. Why didn't they know about the attack? What was the purpose of the attack? Who was behind the attack? When can the terrorists be brought to justice? For weeks the news was full of speculation, and Lonestar promised swift justice.

End Result
Greendales: 11 injured, 27 dead. One of the injured is Tony "The Chef" Gianelli, alledged mobster and owner of Gianelli's, a renowned Seattle restaurant.

Junction: 12 injured Lonestar officers, 13 injured SFD firefighters, 43 injured civilians, 33 dead Lonestar officers, 12 dead SFD firefighters, 3 dead citizens.

Total damages done: 4,3 million nuyen in collateral damages. And an unknown amount of damages due to lost revenue, insurance payout to families of the deceased and revalidation of survivors.

No Cash
Not exactly like being double-crossed by your Johnson, it appeared that it would take a while before van Zant would be able to arrange a new buyer for the chess piece. Apparently, the first buyer of the piece fell through. Perhaps the job had been executed in too brass a fashion, making it too hot and high profile to handle. Luckily, van Zant is ready to make a deal.
