.: The Last Stand at the Chasm :.
· DV8 [21-01-2008 / 13:08:00]

As described to Proteus.

As you make your decision to stay behind on the Metaplanes in order to help repell the Enemy from crossing over into your world, you look out over the bridge. Lucero, changed into the boiling, chaotic mass has been defeated by Leto, the Sanctus Vitae Secundus, who merged with the Dragonheart to transcend himself and change into his devine form. Darke has been pushed into the Chasm, and you wonder if he is really truly gone. You doubt that the world is that lucky. In front of you, on the bridge, you can see Thayla standing there, regal and reinvigorated, the black and white songbird perched on her shoulder, adding to her strength and aiding her song. Sanctus Vitae Secundus, the second coming, a being of pure light, Leto, is standing next to her. His radiance adding to her song in keeping the Enemy at bay.

The enemy is stopped in the dead-centre of the bridge. One side of the bridge has been purified of Darke's atrocious blood rituals, the other side is still stained dark red with blood. The horrors are piling themselves up trying to make it through to the other side, to your side, completely mindless in their zeal to start hurting, corrupting and destroying everything. The front line is instantly ignited by the radiance of Leto's light and Thayla's song, a greenish-blue fire burning their bodies while the stronger examples of their brethren use the smaller brothers to douse, and protect themselves from the flames. Hundreds upon thousands of Horrors swarm your way, the landscape on the other side of the Chasm is crawling with them, as far as the eye can see. Many of them are lost into the Chasm as they fall off the bridge in the chaos and confusion.

You look at the others, Harlequin has taken a few steps back, Frosty still at his side, tending to him, both battered and broken. He looks on with a look of mixed surprise, awe and fear. It's quite unbelievable that, months back, you came to Seattle because you heard your uncle was in a coma, only to find out that he wasn't your uncle at all, that the truth was withheld from you for so long by the ones you love, and that this Elf was actually the legendary Harlequin, alive for the last god-know-how-many thousands of years. He seems so different from Nucleus, yet so alike.

Roadblock, standing next to you, looks up, his face unsure...fear in his eyes. He's gripping the Enfield AS-7 you brought over from the last chapter, taken from the basement of the Wastelands. By far the thoughest Ork you've met in this lifetime, but over the last few days, as you've been running around the metaplanes, you've seen his already thin tolerance grow even thinner and lay bare his carefully restrained sociopathic tendencies.

Six, standing on the opposite side of Roadblock as you are is crying, big tears streaming down her face, sobbing and hiding her face in her hands. You realize how she feels, she knows the sacrifice she has to make. Like Roadblock, she's slowly been breaking down over the last few weeks. It's been coming to a head when she was taken over by the Mother Goddess in the Cathedral underneath the enormous tower in the Architect's village. You can see she's exhausted. You can see she wants to give up. You walk over to her and put your arm around her shoulder. She looks up and in your eyes, in your strength, finds a strength of herself. She nods, and wipes away the tears and takes a deep breath before standing up straight.

Slightly in front of you stands Burnout, you vision of him blurred by the polution he causes in Astral space. The only reason it's even possible that he is here is due to Lethe's possession. Apparently, it's enough to bring him over, or at least fool or please the powers that be. You wish you could feel sympathy for Burnout, or Billy Madison, or whatever his name is...but you realize that he's nothing but a psychopathic, stone-cold killer, temporarily made docile by Lethe, and deserves none of your friendships.

You look out over the bridge and you see the relentless pouding of flesh, claw, fur, tentacle and fang upon the barrier of light that the Sanctus Vitae Secundus emits and the song that Thayla sings. Slowly Thayla and Leto start moving backwards, hand in hand, and allow the horrors to advance. Panic over takes you as you try to work through the many implications this might have. Are Thayla and Leto failing. Is there strength fading?

Then, out of the Chasm, on either side of the bridge, you see many, many non-corporeal figures rise up along side the bride. From the corner of your eye you can see Roadblock leveling his Enfield, obviously he's seen them as well. You refocus your eyes on the figures, and you see men, women, children of different ages, dressed in different garbs as well. You can see many figures wear clothing from ancient traditions, mostly ceremonial. From very primal to very advanced cultures it almost seems that every religion is represented. You even recognize the embodiment of several animal totems amonst the many translucent figures rising up.

The Powers That Be.

As they hover at the same level as the bridge, you feel a sudden surge of power, like a great beast sucking in all the air around it. It takes a second before you hear Harlequin shout a warning that is muffled by an implosion at the centre of the bridge and you see a bluish-white shockwave overtake you and hurl you back hundreds and hundreds of yards. As you come to a standstill, and you hear the shockwave move further and further away from you on the dusty plain, you try to look up. With difficulty you see the bridge slowly dissolving, the translucent figures are gone and you can see Leto and Thayla standing comfortably at your side of the Chasm. Those horrors are making desperate attempts to get across by risking the jump, get burned up as soon as they get within reach of Leto's holy light, and Thayla's pure song. Thousands of horros plummet into the Chasm, you can hear their screams and growls as you slowly lose consciousness.

You wake up at the sound of thunder crashing over Seattle. You're laying in bed, and it takes you a while to recognize your surroundings, you're in Flex' apartment, it's night time and cold sweat is dripping off of your back. You defeated Darke, you helped stop the Horrors. You left Leto behind as Thayla's guardian. You feel cold, lonely, and empty inside.
