...continued from Wet the Witness.
.: The Russian Connection The Russians wanted Lenny found. They didn't know where he was, didn't know who he was with, or when he'd resurface, but he was missing, and in return for Isabella - with Joy as a downpayment - they forced the runners to go and find him. Their reason for wanting Lenny? He had hit Borya, a Vory Brigadir - or Lieutenant - during a meeting at Matchstick's. The Russians wouldn't relinquish any information on what the meeting was about, however, just that they wanted him found.
Their reason for forcing the runners to do this? They figured that the runners were the ones who pulled off the Greendale Bombing run that put Lone Star to shame, and anyone cold-hearted and resourceful enough to pull that off, were exactly the people they needed for the job. So off they went.
Of course, this put everyone in a slight predicament, because some of the people involved in returning Joy and Isabella were involved in other syndicates with varying degrees. Uncle Lou, the friendly, charming and stylish fixer, though not a "made man," was and still is Don Maurice "The Butcher" Bigio's god-son. And Jin and Max, well, they're about as deeply involved in Triad business as one can get without drowning. So everyone had to be really careful, not to let Lou, Jin and Max be seen working with them by the Russians, otherwise, they might think they've got a heavy conflict of interest, and send Isabella back on her merry way to testify for Lone Star.
.: The Chinese Connection Meanwhile, Jin and Max went to the Triad, asking for guidance in regards to them, effectively, working for the Russians for the time being, to which Su Cheng replied that it did not conflict with Triad business, and that, as far as he was aware, it might even benefit the Yellow Lotus in the end. If they had any more information about the true intentions and reasons, or any further developments they were ordered to return for counseling. Meanwhile, they would be completely at service to the enigmatic Morian.
.: Craving Information The runners knew they didn't have any information that explained the situation they found themselves in and that they'd have to find Lenny to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. One of the things they lacked was information they could work with. Who was Lenny? What had he done that was so important? Everyone was going to dig deeper into their contacts to find out what's what. It was Wedge who came up with the information on Lenny as seen in his bio, by way of David. They drew up some plans, that were to be executed simultaneously:
- Lenny, aparently, spent quite a bit of time living out of coffin motels, according to his bio. Wedge and Grind were to go around every coffin motel between Everett and the Puyallup and see if they could find if Lenny was staying at any one of them. Perhaps he was hiding out there somewhere. They were to offer a reward for anyone who could tell them more about Lenny.
- Rolf and Proteus were to go after the BTL angle. Though he had never heard of Lenny, Rolf being somewhat of a connoisseur of BTL's knew a couple of addresses where Lenny could get his supply from.
- 3. The rest would keep milking their contacts until they found something.
.: A Lead After Proteus and Rolf manage to track down a rather well-connected BTL distributor whom Lenny got his BTLs from, they decide on a surprise attack on his doss. All hell breaks loose as the two bust heads and break bones left, right and center and manage to kidnap the dealer, by the name of Green Alan, and extract him with help from James and his Combat Cab pickup. Rolf is rather wounded after the fight, and he decides to run back to his home turf in Redmond, leaving Green Alan in the capable hands of James and Proteus. Proteus manages to convince Wedge that Green Alan should be kept at his warehouse in downtown for interrogation.

.: Subversion Diverted Following that, everyone got together in a hotel conference room at Seatte's Mayflower Park Hotel at midnight, and after Wedge had swept the place for electronics - bugs, cameras, etc - and Six had healed Proteus of the wounds he had picked up while fighting Green Alan's goons, they started discussing a game plan, putting together all the information they had been given, and had uncovered since the evening before, where they had met with the Russians. There was a knock on the door of the conference room, and Sasha walked in, delivering the following pictures so that the runners may identify Lenny when they'd see him:

He left without saying a word, but he got a good look at Lou, Jin and Max looking guilty. Aparently, they had a monkey on their backs. One that looked mean and saw all. Luckily, the meeting didn't degenerate into panic and finger-pointing, and the runners went on to discuss their game plan.
.: The Italian Connection Lou found out, by way of Caesare, that not only the Russians, but the Italians were looking for Lenny, too. An Italian mobster, the Bigio Family consilieri, Tony "The Chef" Gianelli, was seriously injured in the Greendale Bombing, a run in which most of the runners had a part. It seemed that this was somehow tied into things. From recounts of what Nina and Talisman had said about the place - because they were the one who planted the bomb in Greendales, was that there were Russians in the place, too, at the time of the bombing. It couldn't have been a coincidence. The runners came to the conclusion that the bombing at Greendales had thrown a monkey wrench in the machine of the Russians and the Bigio Family leading to stress of some sort, and Lenny must have known more about it.
.: The Japanese Connection After the meeting at the hotel, where the plans remain relatively unchanged, everyone got together for the interrogation of Green Alan, and through magical and mundane means they manage to find out that Lenny was last seen about two weeks prior, complaining to Green Alan that he'd be able to go back to work only after he was finished dealing with the Japanese.
So aparently, the Japanese - and with that, the runners presumed the Yakuza - were also involved. The only person they knew, with contacts within the Seattle Yakuza, was Adam, and he hadn't been around for a while. Since Joy worked with his brother Abel on the Greendale Bombing run, she decided to try and get in contact with him.
After the interrogation, it was unanimously decided that Green Alan couldn't live to tell the tale of this, and so it was Proteus who killed him, with his bare hands. Some of the runners couldn't stand to see him do it, and decided to leave befor the dirty work took place. After that, everyone disbanded and they decided to meet up later that evening at the fountain underneath the Seattle Space Needle.
.: Set Back Early in the morning, Lou went to Lone Star to report his care stolen, while Proteus disposed of Green Alan's body in some district of Auburn, as well as Lou's car, which he used to transport the body, in the Tacoma Stormdrains. Grind and Wedge started their sweep of Seattle to find any loose-lipped street-snitch in our around the numerous coffin motels that could tell them a little something about Lenny. Sadly, when in West Seattle, they attracted the attention of some unwanted individuals, who, at the time, didn't seem to be after anything but the reward money Wedge and Grind were promising. They even made the news. Wedge was critically injured and brought to Dr. Maplethorpe's by Grind while still being hunted by their persuers. Grind managed to get Wedge inside and dispatch of the attackers, and even set the van on fire to have it burned out before Lone Star arrived at the scene. After a few hours of emergency operations, Wedge was in critical, but stable condition.
.: Improvement That night Max and Jin were set up for a meeting with Ralphie, from whom they'd try to pilfer as much information about Lenny and the situation as they possibly could. The person to arrange certain aspects of the meeting was Lou, from which Ralphie cleverly deducted an odd alliance between the Triads and the Mafia. Knowing they had already put themselves in a unfavourable bargaining position this way, they proceeded to talk to Ralphie, whom, in the end, could provide them with two very valuable things. The whereabouts of Lenny, and a meet-n-greet with the owner of Matchstick's. Ralphie payment would be that he would get five minutes with Lenny, together with a companion of his choosing, directly after Lenny's liberation. They had no choice but to take that deal. At the same time Joy met up with her fixer Brandt to discuss the situation she found herself in. She wanted to make sure that she'd be backed by Brandt should anything bad go down. She wanted to know she had his support, and that her money was still safe with him. Also, she was trying to milk him for information on what was going on with Lenny, without spilling her guts to him about it. Brandt negotiated a deal where they'd do a mutual exchange of information, each telling the other what they knew. In the end, Brandt didn't give her that much workable information, but did promise to cover the expenses for all the facial reconstruction she'd need, as well as the repairs and replacements of the damaged headware.
The meeting at the Space Needle was short and to the point. It was decided that Van Zant was not to be told that there was a deal struck with Ralphie. Jin and Max would, after the meet, get aquainted with the manager of Matchstick's, and Six and Grind, with the use of Grind's chopper, would scout around the address they had gotten from Ralphie. Cronos and Roadblock would help Joy set up a meet with Abel in the hopes of getting in contact with Adam.
.: Abel and Nina After getting in contact with Abel, Joy arranged for a meeting outside of the Tyee Yacht Club off lake Union, a fancy, high security retreat for people who could afford privacy. Taking Cronos and Roadblock along as backup, in case something proved to go wrong, they waited outside the high and cleverly disguised fusion gates for Abel to show up. Walking onto the terrain didn't look like a viable option considering all the tough security. They could see boats bobbing around in the private marina harbour down at the water from atop their vantage point on the hillside road leading past the Yacht Club. At 05:00 AM Abel showed up in a van decked out like a pool-cleaners van. He got out and approached the rear of the van, asking Joy to help him retrieve an automated, "dog brained" cleaning drone from the back of the van while they talked. As he opened up the drone he explained that he hadn't talked to his brother in a while.
When the top of the drone came off, Joy found Nina in the drone, clothed in a fully camouflaged B&E suit holding a small canister of oxygen to her mouth to help her breathe. Joy kept to her back, a little shocked at what was unfolding - literally - from the drone. Nina was very excited and tapped Abel smugly on his chest as she exclaimed; "See, I told you. It's the 'Black Pearl!' She's in Seattle!" When she discovered that Joy was there, and had overheard what she had said, she became angry, irrate and went to sit on the passenger's side inside the van as Abel and Joy concluded their talk with his promise to relay a message to Adam if and when he saw him next.

Jin and Max are admitted to Matchstick's and are joined by the manager of the club, by the name of Carl Steward, for a quick drink, introductions and a chat in which he claims to have heard mention of Jin before. He's very hospitable and charming, and explains the club and the type of atmosphere he tries to retain. The following morning, people go about their business individually, trying to find out as much as they can about the address where Lenny is supposedly being kept, about Wedge's condition, and about the situation Lenny is involved in. They also get a call from van Zant asking for an update in which he tells them that the deadline for the deal with Lone Star, which he says will be beneficial for all parties involved, will be October 20th, end of business. That sets the time limit back a few days, so the runners are going to have to put a little pressure behind their actions. A meeting is set up in the Tacoma stormdrains, out of sight of the normal populace to go over the information Grind and Six obtained on their scouting mission. Cronos did some scouting of his own, as did Jin and Max, to find out the address is close by where Wedge and Grind were attacked. In fact, Grind claims that the people that attacked them are the same people that are occupying the address.
.: The Jamaican Connection The address, 3205 Bonair Drive, West Seattle, is along a road of very expensive ex-colonial houses fully renovated and maintained, running parallel to Alki Way, which is a boulevard along the only stretch of natural beach left in the Seattle sprawl. A dark spot lives like a boil on the ass of this wealthy neighbourhood, because a rather vicious Jamaican/Haitian gang makes its home at 3205, close to the beach. Several houses around their headquarters are empty, or have been squated by gang members and they have large parties each night, with loud music, shouting and a big bonfire in the front yard. Muscle cars drive off and on and Lone Star refuses to do anything about it.
The group is called the Sparkle Posse and are lead by King Benny a supposed Voodoo priest.
The colonial house that the gang headquarters in, and which is supposedly Lenny's hide-out, is four stories, including the ground floor, has a porch, and a balcony on the top floor. It's set along a hillside running down towards the Pudget Sound, along which Alki Way and Bonair Drive both run. The house is set about twenty yards from the road, along a relatively open piece of ground. There are, at any one time, about forty gang members around, and apart from tremendous amounts of pistols, SMG's and even some grenades, no real weaponry was spotted. Six, who did an cursory astral snoop around the place, found two rooms locked off by wards that she didn't dare to penetrate. Grind's helicopter sensors gave them a relatively good layout of the place, which, though not detailed, was going to have to do since no blue prints of the building were in existence. It was decided that Proteus would get one of his contracts to hack into the house's telecom network and use the available telecom unit's vidscreens as passive cameras, so that they could monitor the house from within. Until that was set up, some research was done into Voodoo and specifically into King Benny and his Sparkle Posse.
That night, while at the wastelands, Joy bumped into some rich kids who were looking for some fun. One of them, Lance, was very interested in her, and was hitting on her like mad. She got him drunk and lifted his credstick before leaving the club with Cronos to find a hotel to spend the night in.

At night, while taking a shower in the hotel before retreating to bed, Cronos heard three intruders creep into their hotel-room. He quickly dressed and attacked the three, who were the same guys they had seen at the club. Lance had already attacked and shot Joy at point-blank as Cronos dispatched of the two others, and finally of Lance. Quickly searching their bodies he found nothing of interest, except a tattoo on Lance's arm of a crown with a scroll underneath reading "Nova Rich" which he filed away as a piece of info to dive into later, once he got Joy to Maplethorpe's.
Once there, Joy joined Wedge in ICU after the bullets had been dug out of her chest. Meanwhile, Cronos was wanted by Lone Star for leaving the scene of a triple homicide. An APB was issued for his apprehension. He was considered armed, dangerous and on the run.
.: Another One Down A meeting was arranged during at night, at the Buddhist temple in Coleman park, overlooking Lake Washington, to go over what had happened, and how to proceed. Flex, Proteus' decker contact, who was used instead of David because he had probably already gotten far more information about the deal the runners were working on from the help he had provided for them, had arranged for the camera feeds to be set up and arranged for a demonstration meeting at 1:00 AM the following day.

The meeting with flex at 01:00 AM was held at a construction site for a new Seattle corporate headquarters for Trans-Latvia Enterprises, on the corner of 23rd Avenue and Yesler Way. The building was patrolled by Knight Errant, which, obviously, were paid off by Flex to let them pass. The building was a multi-story, high rise, completely empty, waiting to be furnished with pre-fab, "dynamic office installations." Meanwhile, Flex was jacked in on one of the empty floors, overlooking the construction site inside the building, guarded closely by Douglas, who had managed to arrange the pay off with Knight Errant through virtue of his former KE employement, while Flex said he had a contact within Trans-Latvia that still owed him some favours.
The video feeds - eight in total, scattered around the ground floor and the first floor - were invaluable, because it gave them a look inside the gang's headquarters and operations. However, since none of the runners could understand that particular brand of city-speak, they had to get some linguasofts in order to translate.
The runners were very happy with Flex' work and asked if he could extend his service to include access to the footage for a couple of days. Flex said that he would arrange for the footage to be stored at a secure server for a day, while he'd give the runners live access to the feeds, as well as the stored footage, from a terminal of their choosing. They chose Lou's portable computer and set up a base of operations in the basement of the Wastelands
The rest of the night/morning was used to arrange for the Jamaican liguasofts through various fixers and scanning the footage as it streamed in, trying to determine if Lenny was indeed at the house, and to find out as much as possible before the deadline was up and they'd have to move in on the headquarters to bust Lenny out.
While picking up the linguasoft from Bishop, Cronos was introduced to Nina who said she had some surveillance work for him over the next couple of weeks, perhaps even months. It seemed that B&E and pool cleaning wasn't teh only thing Nina was good at.
Rolf, the only one capable of slotting the Linguasofts, and the only one speaking city-speak, used the soft to scan various parts that were already marked by Lou and Jin as potentially informative material and he came to the conclusion that he was 95% sure that Lenny was there. It also seemed that he was not there voluntarily, and that he was beaten by the Jamaicans on a regular basis in order to give up some information. This was all under the initiative of one of the gang's lieutenants, a vicious woman who used and abused the gang members for her own carnal pleasure with a zeal that seemed almost possessed.
.: The Plan An early morning meeting was scheduled with Van Zant to review their plans; Cronos and Proteus would sneak onto the roof of the building and try to get inside to find Lenny. Roadblock and Grind would be close by, ready to give fire- and airsupport, in case things went to hell and a quick extraction was needed. Six would summon two elementals and be on call in one of the empty houses across the road, guarded by Max, in case anything went wrong. Rolf would use some money to buy drugs and chips and see if he could schmooze his way into one of the large, nightly parties, ready to provide support if and when needed. All the while Jin and Lou would be in the basement of the wastelands, keeping an eye on the telecom camera feeds and provide necessary scheduling arrangements.
The plan was to go down as followed; At night, Cronos and Proteus bust Lenny out of the house, with or without the help of all the other runners on stand-by should it all get potentially messy. Grind would fly them to the Ship Yard in Bremerton, where they would seek shelter in one of the old, abandoned ships. Grind would fly back to Seattle and pick Max and Six up at a designated position in the Puyallup, then fly them over to Bremerton. Meanwhile, Jin would call Ralphie and give him the coordinates for a pick up in the Puyallup for him and one companion, as agreed. He would get five minutes - no more, no less - with where he was not allowed to touch Lenny, which meant that he'd most likely bring a mage that would be able to probe his mind to get to the information he was trying to find. While Grind and Roadblock were picking them up, Cronos, Proteus, Max and Six would preparing the meeting. After the five minutes would be up, Ralphie and his companion would be taken back to Seattle and Lou would call van Zant for the delivery of Lenny. Grind and Roadblock would pick up the rest of the team and rendez-vous with van Zant and potentially Russians to drop of Lenny. End of the run. Get paid. Get lost. Done.

.: The Execution Well, they pretty much followed the plan until Cronos and Proteus tried to get into the house. It was decided that Proteus would sneak inside and find Lenny while Cronos waited on the roof, maintaining an invisibility on Proteus. When Proteus lowered himself to the balcony, he looked into the room adjescent to the balcony where the lieutenant, together with three others were engaged in a strange ritual of chant and dance. Naked and covered in bloodied symbols, they didn't notice him and continued with their dance. Two windows were also reachable from the balcony, but they lead into different parts of the top floor. One of the windows was dark, leading to what looked like an attic-like, storage part of the floor, and the other was boarded up from the inside. Proteus used electronic glass cutters to make a hole in the glass in front of the boarded up window and he could hear whining and complaining coming from that room. He quickly surmised that it was lenny and moved towards the other window. There he did the same, and easily opened the window to climb inside.
The room he entered ran all the way along the length of the house towards the back of the house. There he found a door amongst all the rubble and old stuff you usually find in an attic that would lead to a hallway behind the room he'd found the ritual in, that hallway would most likely lead to the stairs going down, too. He opened the door and peeped inside. Two gang members were sitting on the ground, talking, smoking and drinking. Weapons close at hand. Obviously they were guarding the room with the ritual inside. Proteus, still invisible, stepped out of the door and went to stand next to it. One of the gang members walked up to the door and went to close it again. When Proteus decided it was safe for him to creep from one end of the hallway to the other, to the door opposite of the door he'd just came out of - the only leading to the room he'd heard Lenny in - he was noticed by the guards, and the invisibility spell faded. He drew his sword and went to attack the guards. Once he chopped off an arm of the first ganger, the others in the room beyond were taken from the ritual induced reverie.
All hell broke loose.
Cronos dropped the invisibility spell and he dropped down to the balcony looking into the room beyond to see three of the four people inside reacting to the noise in the other room by reaching for rather large handguns and rushing out of the room to meet Proteus' katana. The last remaining person in the room, the lieutenant spotted him and walked over to the double doors leading out onto the balcony. She was naked, carrying nothing but a wicked knife.
Six called her elementals, one - an Earth elemental - attacked the adjescent house, in which more gangers were holed up, while her fire elemental attacked the primary house, causing as much mayhem as it could to keep the focus off what happened at the very top of the house. Rolf, who had been inside almost the entire night, dived through a window and decided to take refuge outside as the fire elemental set the house on fire. Maximilian apparently carried a rather powerful sniper rifle because he was snipping into the room that held the ritual from one of the upper floors of the house he and Six were hiding in.
Cronos raised his assault rifle and shot at the lieutenant, only to see his burst bounce off her like marbles. As she rushed towards him, knife raised in the air, Maximilian hit her twice with his sniper rifle, to the same effect. End result, Proteus kills most of the gangers or at least seriously wounds them, while Proteus is lying on the floor of the balcony with a knife sunk deep into his shoulder. He would've died if it was for Proteus walking into the other room, where he expected Lenny to be, and incidentally also one of the rooms Six wouldn't penetrate in fear of breaking through the ward that was set on it. The lieutenant reacted to him breaching the ward and went after him as he went after - a very reluctant Lenny, who thought the blood-covered, sword wielding Elf was there to kill him. When he finally caught up with Lenny, he found him fainted on the floor, burried underneath an old matress, a chest of old glass, a moldy fur coat and various other pieces of old furniture.
Cronos signaled for a pickup as Proteus engaged the lieutenant, not knowing she was, seemingly, invulnerable. He dropped his sword, not having enough room to swing it, as she came running up towards him. She wrapped her hands around his throat and managed to body-check him to the ground, as he punched at her, his punches fueled by his potent magic. Within seconds he had caved in the side of her torso and she was lying on top of him, bleeding to death. Proteus picked up the unconscious form of Lenny, went to the balcony where he and the wounded Cronos latched themselves onto the ropes dangling from the helicopter while Roadblock emptied an entire belt of ammo on anyone who came walking up the stairs or shot at the helicopter from the yard below. Most of the gangers were busy quenching the flames on their friends' backs because due to the efforts of Six' fire elemental the old house had lit up like a christmas tree.
Grind gunned it for Bremerton, and everyone got the hell out of there.
They touched down some time later, having dodged all the corporate and restricted airspace and found a boat amongst the big conglomerate ship yard - hundreds, if not thousands of boats of all sizes tied together to rust and rot. The boat was old, probably a small navy frigate, completely stripped bare of anything that could be reused and recycled. The only thing that was left was a bare, steel shell, waiting to be salvaged by someone to be molten down for the ore. Meanwhile, Lenny had woken up during the flight there, and Proteus had bandaged Cronos as best he could. Once touched down, the helicopter left for the pickup where they'd meet Six and Max, who had a little trouble vacating the area when they were run off the road by two Japanese men in a car. They managed to lose them and resumed their rush to the pick up.
Rolf managed to make his way to the Wastelands, while Lou empathically tried to convince the others to break their deal with
Once Six and Max were picked up, Ralphie was called and told where to go in the Puyallup and when to be there. Six and Max were dropped off at Bremerton, while Lenny tried to strike a deal with Cronos to at least tell him who he was supposed to be delivered to. He'd provide them with the information he had, the information that made him such a hot commodity, if only he would be privvy to knowing what his fate would be. He reasoned that if he was to be given to the Russians, his life would be finished, and the same went for certain factions within the Mafia. The only way he'd get out of it alive if he was given to the right factions within the Mafia, or the Yakuza. Cronos told him, after which he freely started crying. He managed to gain the sympathy of some of the runners for a while.
Ralphie was picked up, together with a man nobody knew or recognised. From his dress and his arrogance it was almost certain he was a mage. When they arrived, the both of them were stripped of all their weapons by Roadblock before they were let out of the helicopter. The both of them were taken to Lenny, who was kept in one of the rooms below decks. After a minute or so the mage started to smile smugly and turned to Ralphie to show him that they had been successful in retrieving whatever it was that they were looking to retrieve from Lenny. But before the two could leave the ship, heavy footfalls were heard coming from down the corridor and slowly the bodyguard of van Zant materialised into being, an invisibility spell quickly wearing off as he wrapped both his large hands around the throat of Ralphie's court-mage, throttling him in mere minutes while everyone, stunned and wide-eyed, looked on, unable to move.
Nobody knew where he came from, how he got there, but they were suddenly faced with their own betrayal to their Johnson, for the bodyguard was obviously there to right a strategical wrong and to correct a flaw in the runner's plans. After everyone got over the shock, the bodyguard turned to Ralphie and retrieved a credstick from between the folds of his African garb. Ralphie, still shocked, looked at the read-out on the stick, nodded an unsure agreement and announced that he would like to be returned to Seattle. The mage was dumped into the Pudget Sound, together with his gear and weapons, undoubtedly eaten by a toxic Naga or something even less definable. On the way back nobody said anything, but Lou - happy that his telecom call made a good difference - called van Zant to make the arrangements for the hand-off. On the ground, in the Puyallup James was waiting to take Ralphie back. The bodyguard started walking and was out of sight within no time. Six and Proteus were dropped off at the Wastelands while Max and Cronos decided to go and pick up a copy of the information that Lenny had stashed in a simdeck of a coffin motel somewhere near the University of Washington. After the retrieval of two discs, with a simsense recording on it, Cronos decided to watch it and saw what all the fuss was about.
In the end, Max kept "Disc #1" and Cronos kept "Disc #2".

From Wet the Witness:
"A strange, well-dressed, Japanese man approaches the runners outside of the compound, asking for a light for his cigarette before walking further down the road. Everyone's paranoid as hell and decide to get out of there."
Mr. Hanada, is how he introduced himself that time outside the compound, and since then he's been showing up regularly, seemingly following the runners around, keeping an eye on them. Cronos confronted him, one evening, outside of Dr. Maplethorpe's street clinic. After they had gotten Joy back from the Russians, she was in need of some major medical attention because of several blows to the head with the back end of Sasha's rifle. When the doctor had looked her over, he concluded that some of her headware was damaged beyond repair and had to be replaced, mostly her eyes and communications-ware. The eyes were still operable, but only in black-and-white, and the vision was terribly granular and static-ridden. She'd have to do with that until her new eyes and add-ons would come in the following week. While he was examining her, he found four very interesting things inside her head:
- A cortex-bomb.
- A tracking signal.
- A "shunt."
- Heavily encrypted data on hidden partition of her headware memory.
The doctor disabled the tracking signal immediately before closing her up and applying some temporary orthoskin on her face to make her half-way representable to the outside world. He also, for a fee, of course, discussed his findings with Cronos. He explained that the "shunt" was a neural dampner that would induce unconsciousness as a "persona chip" was slotted and uploaded into her skillwires. It was often used for hookers so that they could be whoever they needed to be for their clients and not have to go through the degrading experience themselves...well, at least not consciously.
When Joy woke up, she was confronted by Mr. Hanada, who pretended to be a doctor working at Maplethorpe's clinic. He gaver her some medicine for her pain. Later, it seems, he must've switched the tracking signal back on when she was under, because Maplethorpe found it active again when he opened her up so that he could jury-rig a connection to her headware memory and allow her to download the encrypted files.
Since then he's shown up at almost random occassions to, rather openly, keep an eye on the runners, and in particular on Joy.
